The only qualm I have with these mechanics is that they’re essential to completing a trial. You can save your teammates if you please, an icon will pop up to lead you to them if you choose to follow, but if the antagonists spot you completing this time consuming task, it could cost you your life. The ability to pull an enemy off of them and the ability to administer first aid can both be overpowered if not injected into the game correct, but Trials manages to find a good balance in these mechanics. There are multiple ways to help your fellow test subjects. In the first Outlast games, you’re a lone, helpless survivor… in Trials, you’re a group of helpless survivors. I think the set design was critical to maintaining the feel of an outlast game while introducing multiplayer, but more than that, they nailed the mechanics. Comms are optional, as the game gives you an alternate way to communicate if you want to at all. Spawning into a trial with up to four players, I quickly realized that the aspect of multiplayer doesn’t dilute the experience one bit. The multiplayer experience in Trials is excellent. Not having enough to join your lobby, not having enough to play missions… the beta seems to have open, public lobbies, which is absolutely helpful in finding teammates (and probably essential in such an early beta). The improved visuals are also a nice touch, and might make the game’s locations feel even scarier than they did in the two previous games.A common problem in multiplayer games is, simply put, not having enough friends. The only thing that the series was lacking was some real replay value, and that might be fixed with the inclusion of a multiplayer mode. This is a franchise that has always shown a ton of potential with its exciting blend of survival horror and found footage gameplay. It’s great to see Red Barrells continuing the Outlast legacy. Sharing the fear could sound like it would diminish the impact of the game’s scary visuals, but games like Dead by Daylight have proved that multiplayer horror games are as effective as singleplayer ones. For the first time in the Outlast series, players will have to cooperate with a friend to solve the game’s sadistic puzzles. Of course, the star of the show here is the multiplayer feature. However, that doesn’t mean that Outlast Trials won’t have its fair share of terrifying locations, as we’ve seen that things like abandoned warehouses and spooky haunted mansions will be part of the game.
It seems like this game has taken a page out of Outlast II’s book, featuring some larger open spaces that look nothing like the first Outlast claustrophobic asylum. The few scenes we’ve seen so far of Outlast Trials look positively fantastic, in a twisted way.
As we know from games like Outlast: Whistleblower, this series has never shied away from touchy subjects, and it seems like Trials will keep some of that infamously twisted atmosphere intact.
