Do the old school save multiple copies of your dissertation in multiple locations method and you'll be fine. Just make sure you have a reliable SSD as it's boot drive. I would rather spend the time learning how modern technology can help me with my dissertation like cloud back up, ability to review edits, citation fomating etc etc.īasically any Windows Desktop PC that was made within the last decade would suffice. The last thing you need is troubleshoot why a program doesn't work well on a virtual machine platform. Just keep it simple, get a windows machine going and run Wordperfect on that. If you're not knowledgeable about tech at all. so I just assumed I could, and that since WordPerfect and Parallels are both made by Corel I would be able to run it on a Mac.īut I am not knowledgeable about tech at all. that say you can run Windows on a Mac, you can run it on M1/2 Macs, you can use parallels, you can run x86/圆4 software, etc. I'm not technologically knowledgeable enough to understand it, I have just seen a bunch of articles, videos, etc. Far cheaper than purchasing a new computer for a seemingly single task. If it works, connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor then use that.

I still don't understand what's wrong with the Windows laptop that OP has.

If that seems too much of a change then even going with something like Microsoft Office or LibreOffice would allow working on those documents in Windows again.

It's all plain text so it's portable (although, not a big deal with the amount of storage available these days). It can format for a lot of use cases including citations, which sounds important for a dissertation. It just seemed safer to use because it doesn't tie you into a particular software. I've even used it but didn't major in math. It's for a doctoral dissertation, which I assumed someone might have mentioned Latex or that it would be good to try it out in the future.

If OP is in the legal profession, buying that Macbook that doesn't support WordPerfect would have been a poor decision. OP didn't mention explicitly that they are in the legal profession but that it's common in the legal profession. He is obviously in the Legal profession which is where WordPrefect dominates. LaTex is mainly used academic circles for math.
